Retreat Ministry

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28

Sabbath Retreat Days are times apart from the hustle and bustle of every day routines in life. These intentional times of contemplation and quiet provide quality opportunities to enhance relationship with God and others. A retreat day can be a short time of one hour a day set apart from regular space, or a few hours, a full day or several days; possibly an extended time of weeks or months. Retreats quench the thirsty soul with God possibilities. Opportunities for retreat could be:

  • Personal private prayer days
  • Women retreats
  • Clergy “Take a Breath Day”
  • Seasonal Retreats (Advent, Lenten, Pentecost, Epiphany…)
  • Small group launch and closing opportunities
  • Group Spiritual Direction
  • Silence and Contemplative Quiet Days
  • Community building for leadership teams, staff and groups

Seasonal Sabbath Retreat Days – This year’s Seasonal Sabbath Retreat Days follow the theme of calendar seasons. Each season, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring brings unique insights and invitations for the spiritual journey. Even in climates where there is very little seasonal change in temperature, the trained eye can notice little nuances suggesting the slightest interior movement of God’s divine creating. Each season you are invited explore the interior landscape of your heart while experiencing the beauty and joy of the season through a photo pilgrimage prayer walk. In addition to the photo pilgrimage, each Seasonal Sabbath Retreat will have three additional guided prayer practices.

Online group retreats – Living Streams Flowing Water is in process of preparing a nine month online retreat with the St. Ignatius Spiritual Exercises. Each day participants will practice the exercises in the privacy of their own home and twice monthly the retreatants will gather via Zoom.us or Skype for instruction and group spiritual direction. This is an exciting way of walking more closely with Jesus in daily life.

Kathryn J. Tashima Director of Congregational Life, Sylvania United Church of Christ, Sylvania, Ohio

We at Sylvania United Church of Christ have had the privilege to work with Rev. Dr. Brenda Buckwell of Living Streams Flowing Water, LLC, on two occasions for our women’s retreats.  Her abundant gifts are evident in the planning and leadership of the retreats. Brenda crafted our time together in a creative and sacred way. Our participants deemed her retreats as among the favorites over the past 25 years. From the beginning, the contracts and billing were handled in a very professional manner. Brenda is an extraordinary retreat leader and has blessed the women of Sylvania UCC.
